AFCIs detect the unique electrical signature of arcing faults, which can occur in damaged or deteriorated wiring. Per NEC 210.12, AFCI protection is required in most habitable rooms of dwelling units, including bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, and hallways. They protect against both series arcs (in a single conductor) and parallel arcs (between conductors).
