Electrical Exam Term

Service Entrance

The point where the utility's power lines connect to a building's electrical system, including the service conductors, meter, and main disconnect.

Detailed Explanation

NEC Article 230 covers service entrance requirements. The service typically includes the weatherhead (service head), service mast or lateral, meter socket, and main disconnecting means. The service disconnect must be rated for the available fault current and be located at a readily accessible point nearest the entrance of service conductors. Most residential services are 200A, 120/240V, single-phase.
