Subpanel
A smaller distribution panel fed from the main panel, used to provide circuit protection and power distribution to a specific area of a building.
Detailed Explanation
Subpanels require a separate neutral bus and grounding bus (they must NOT be bonded together as in the main panel). A 4-wire feeder (two hots, neutral, and ground) must be run from the main panel to the subpanel. NEC 250.32 covers requirements for subpanels in separate buildings. Subpanels are commonly used in garages, workshops, additions, and to expand capacity when the main panel is full.
